Fair in Grândola with music, food and crafts

The traditional August Fair in Grândola, in the district of Setúbal, kicks off this Thursday and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25 with musical shows, equestrian activities, handicrafts and the region’s “best gastronomy”.

The event, which will be held at the Grândola Fair and Exhibition Park until the 26th of this month, has the 50th anniversary of April 25 as its motto, with the highlight being an exhibition that invites visitors to “travel through the early years of Democratic Local Power”, the council said in a statement.

According to the municipality, the exhibition, which will be on display in the central nave of the venue, “covers the early years of Local Democratic Power in Grândola, the major works carried out and the important projects for the future” of the municipality.

In terms of music, the program of what is considered one of the “oldest free fairs in the country” this year includes performances by T-Rex and Supa Squad (22), Nininho Vaz Maia (23), Marisa Liz (24), Mariza (25) and Fernando Daniel (26) on the main stage.

There will also be entertainment on the Bar Stage, starting at 11:45pm, with various cover bands, with Friday reserved for the band Épikos (Portuguese music), Saturday for H.O.T. – Hits On Time (pop/international) and Sunday for the group Linhas Cruzadas (60s).

The Original Bandalheira, Orquestra Improvável, Al-Fanfare, Porbatuka and Camisas Negras will entertain the streets of the fairground between Thursday and Monday, starting at 8:30pm.

In the arena, lovers of equestrian activities will be able to watch the “50 years of April 25” equestrian gala, the equestrian festival and a sevillanas show and natural horsemanship demonstration, as well as equestrian baptisms and carriage rides, the municipality said.

Handicrafts are another attraction at the fair, which will feature a display and sale of cork, wrought iron, basketry, ceramics and woodwork by more than 30 artisans at the main entrance.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy “the best of regional gastronomy” in the area of restaurants and bars, taverns and regional products, while in the free fair area there will be “16 amusements for adults and children and around 200 fairgoers”.

According to the organizers, in order to guarantee “more and better safety conditions” and taking into account the increase in the number of visitors in recent years, there will be a safety corridor in the show square with 20 seats for visitors with reduced mobility.

There will also be “a reinforcement of security resources and a medical post” and the “creation of new parking lots” is planned, he said.

Throughout the five days, the Municipality of Grândola will once again provide two tourist trains free of charge, running between the fair and various strategic points in the Alentejo town.
