Pichardo wins silver medal

Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo won the silver medal in the triple jump at the Paris2024 Olympic Games today, missing out on the clear objective of revalidating the title he won at Tokyo2020.

After passing the qualifying round with relative ease with 17.44 meters, Pichardo was beaten by Spain’s Jordan Díaz by two centimeters, just like at the Rome2024 Europeans.

The Spaniard, who was also born in Cuba, reached the mark that gave him the Olympic title in the first jump (17.86), but Pichardo still managed to get within two centimeters (17.84) in the second jump, but he couldn’t do better than that.

Despite missing out on revalidating his title, Picardo won Portugal’s third medal of the Games today, the second silver, making Paris2024 his second best result ever, equaling Athens, both with two silver and one bronze, and only behind Tokyo2020, with four medals (one gold, one silver and two bronze).

Also at the Stade de France, Portugal’s Jéssica Inchude took eighth place in the weight throw, throwing 18.41 meters, earning another diploma for the Portuguese mission, which has a total of 12 top eight placings, after entering the final with the ninth best mark (18.36).

The day began with the João Ribeiro/Messias Baptista duo competing in the semi-finals of the K2 500 meters, a canoeing discipline in which they are defending world champions, qualifying for the final, which took place a few hours later.

In the decisive race, the Portuguese pair were unable to break into the fight for the top spots and ended the event in sixth place.

Em estreia absoluta em Jogos Olímpicos, o breaking disputou hoje a competição feminina, na qual Portugal esteve representado com Vanessa Marina, ‘b-girl’ que concluiu a sua prova no 13.º lugar, entre 17 concorrentes.
